Music in the Classroom
Winnie van der Walt completed a National Diploma in Performing at the Tshwane University of Technology and a Teacher’s Diploma from Trinity College of London (LTCL).
She received a certificate in Music Therapy at the University of Pretoria and obtained Pre-Primary, Advanced Pre-Primary, Levels 1 and 2 Orff certificates. She serves on the committee of The South African Society for Music Teachers (SASMT), as well as on the committee for Orff Africa.
Winnie attended the Orff Summer Schools at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria, and (S.I.M.E.O.S.) in Verona. Her other international experience include participation in various masterclass workshops under masters such as Gerard van de Geer (Tasmania), Christoph Maubach, Jon Madin, Suzy Davies-Splitter (Australia) Doug Goodkin, Sofia Lopez- Ibor, James Harding, (San Francisco) Ulrike Jungmair (Austria) Jos Wuytack, and Keith Terry (Body Percussion).
As a member of The International Society for Music Education (ISME), she attended seminars in Bologne Orff Society of South Africa as well as PASMAE, which made it possible to visit countries such as Botswana, Ghana, Swaziland, Italy and Austria.
She has presented numerous workshops in South Africa for Orff Africa, SASMT, Allmusic, Edumusic, West Coast Youth Orchestra (WCYO) and the Department of Education at the University of the Witwatersrand (WITS), and PASMAE.
She is also a qualified Colourstrings and Colourkeys teacher for Kindergarten, Foundation Phase, Level 1(CATMK. Cert.). She is currently the music coordinator at Southdowns College in Irene, Centurion, and teaches Gr 4-7 class music, and piano. She also teaches two Primary School and one High School Marimba bands. She loves cooking and living life to its fullest!
